The Scott Monument

On the south side of the station is Market Street, which was one of the principal market sites during the Victorian era. Market Street is home to the Edinburgh City Art Centre (www.edinburghmuseums.org.uk; free), showcasing nationally recognised Scottish art alongside the work of up-and-coming artists over six floors of an impressive former warehouse.

At the eastern end of Princes Street is General Register House, completed in 1788 from a design by Robert Adam. As part of the National Records of Scotland (www.nrscotland.gov.uk), it stashes historical records, such as those created by Scottish government, businesses, landed estates, families, courts and churches. Behind is New Register House, which stores records of births, marriages and deaths in Scotland, while in front is a statue of the Duke of Wellington, resplendent in battle dress astride his steed, Copenhagen.
